CHROMATIC ALTAR | 2025
Guggenheim x Hilma's Ghost & Eve Biddle
Hilma’s Ghost hosted Chromatic Altar at the Guggenheim Museum on February 13th, 2025, in collaboration with artist Eve Biddle, blending feminist and spiritualist activations in a striking tribute to the museum’s architecture and history. The event honored Hilla Rebay, the museum’s co-founder and first director, whose vision helped shape the Guggenheim’s commitment to modernism and metaphysical exploration. It also reflected on the legacy of Hilma af Klint, whose 2018 blockbuster exhibition marked a watershed moment for women artists. By engaging with these histories, Chromatic Altar reclaimed the museum as a sacred, feminist space, weaving together the radical contributions of overlooked women in art.
The activation featured a mesmerizing performance by 18 dancers that used colored scarves and engaged in gestures of knotting, weaving, and whirling—symbolic acts of witchcraft and mysticism. The performance culminated in sheer fabric cascading from the balconies, transforming the atrium into a living, abstract painting. Guests also explored their own relationship with color through a specially created color oracle deck crafted by Hilma's Ghost. The evening concluded with a somatic color meditation led by Sharmistha Ray and Dannielle Tegeder, inviting guests to channel collective strength and resistance in turbulent times. Through movement, color, and spiritual engagement, Chromatic Altar reimagined the Guggenheim as both a site of artistic transcendence and feminist solidarity.
Special thanks to our collaborator Eve Biddle; Amy Larimer, Professor and Director of the Dance Program at Lehman College, for her choreographic consultation; and to the dancers from Lehman College for their performance: Mariah Castillo, Claudia Collado, Rosey Dixon, Mariah Escobar, Miriam Gabriel, Liethis Hechavarria, Cynthia LaCruz, G.V.
